  Guy-Joseph Ropartz was a Franck pupil:
a composer and administrator, who during the tumultuous years before World War I made friends on all political sides in
France, and after it became director of the Strausbourg Conservatory. He refused to be drawn into the various debates
that raged on all sides, and preferred teaching and raising his family. He was by his admission a Celtic Breton, and
much of his programmatic music centered around that, but he also composed a great many non-programmatic works, including
five symphonies. His Fifth, finished in 1944 during the horrors of World War II, is nonetheless a work filled with hope,
even joy. Ropartz had lost his wife and many friends, and turned to music, the countryside, and his religion for
comfort. Technically, the process of simplification started in his Second Symphony--and which led his friend Paul Dukas
to claim he'd given in to the younger, less intelligent youth of his day--is completed in this work. At times, it comes
close ot the Neo-Classicism of Albert Roussel, which is unusual thing for a composer of 80 years of age. The performance
is only moderate, but the work is attractive, and deserves to be heard.
